pOLyPhoNiCA is a Recorder Trio comprised of Simone Curley, Michael Piraner and Grace Barton.


pOLyPhoNiCA aim to promote the recorder as a versatile and expressive instrument through the presentation of a wide variety of repertoire including both early and modern music.

We are committed to advancing the recorder as a modern instrument through collaboration with composers. Current commissions include works from composers in the UK and Australia.

We are dedicated to providing workshops on recorder playing and performance practice to people of all ages through festivals, summer schools and programmes for junior and secondary schools.




Simone Curley

Simone studied the recorder at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, Franz Liszt Hochscule in Weimar and the Birmingham Conservatoire and has taken lessons with such prestigious professors as Pamela Thorby, Anneke Boeke, Annabel Knight, Myrian Eichberger and Ross Winters.

Simone performs regularly with her various ensembles and as a soloist. She teaches on the Knuston Hall adult education courses and is a conductor of the Northampton Society of Recorder Players.




Michael Piraner

Michael has a Diploma of the NSW State Conservatorium of Music, A BMus from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music where he studied recorder with Owen Watkins and an MA in Music from the University of Birmingham. He moved to London in 1991 where he studied recorder with Anneka Boeke at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama.

From 1998-2001 Michael held the position of recorder teacher at Newcastle Conservatorium of Music in Australia. He has performed in the UK with Birmingham Baroque, and in the USA and Australia with Watkins Ale.

Michael has taken part as a tutor in the international music festival Recorder 2000 in Australia, and has recorded and broadcast with various radio programmes in Australia and the United States.


Grace Barton

Grace graduated from the Birmingham Conservatoire in 1998 with a First Class BMus Hons degree and went on to gain a Diploma in Professional Studies in Recorder Performance.

In 2004 she graduated from the Royal Conservatory in The Hague where she had studied recorder with Reine-Marie Verhagen and Historical Performance Practice with Peter van Heyghen and she has also studied with the renowned Anneke Boeke.

Grace has performed regularly as a soloist and with Birmingham Baroque and La Sprezzatura. She is director of the Wirral Recorder Orchestra. She now teaches at the Birmingham Conservatoire and tutors on various day and residential courses.
